We can characterize your native grass or forb population utilizing seeds to produce an isoenzyme genetic gel for only $20-25 per population. Only one tablespoon of cleaned seed is needed. Most native grasses produce banding patterns which are constant through time---if you collect seed from the same populations each year, and run each year as a separate gel, the banding patterns will be identical!
You can check wild populations against cultivars; or check the identification of wild material that has been sent to be grown out; or check local wild populations against each other within a particular area. With grasses we have found that sampling wild populations on 500-foot elevational levels, and/or separation of 5-15 miles in each direction gives clear relationships of the indigenous populations.
Example of a gel of Great
Basin Wild Rye populations.
For the gels, your seeds need to be absolutely cleaned free of chaff, awns, hulls, etc., and we will send you small zip-loc plastic bags for your samples. You have to make sure that not even one weed seed or seed of another species is mixed into your sample, otherwise it make contaminate your gel. We need some basic information to be put on each seed sample bag:
Species, County where collected, State
Township, Range and Section, and/or Lat. and Long.
Lot number (if any), Elevation in feet, Annual rainfall in inches.
Each gel has spaces for 66 populations, and we suggest leaving a space every 7-10 populations so they are easier to read. That means you have about 60 spaces on each gel. We will arrange the populations on the gel alphabetically by species, and then either elevationally or geographically. If you have a preference, let us know.
We normally will send you a xerox in black and white and keep the original gel as part of our registry. We can also scan and put the gel up on our server so you can download it. Add $20 extra for 1-240 gels scanned up available on our server.
We run gels as soon as 60 populations are accumulated, and it takes about a month turn-around for processing. PRICE: $25 per population, when 1-30 populations are submitted at one time. Price only $20 per populations when 31 or more populations are submitted at one time. We do not invoice, orders need to be prepaid when submitting samples. Cleaning of seed samples, if required to prepare the samples for the analysis, will be charged extra.
